USA – Denver, Colorado - The Lumber Baron Inn & Garden Denver’s Mystery Mansion

One of the most unique and gracious B&Bs in which we have ever stayed in is the Lumber Baron Inn & Gardens in Denver, Colorado. It is an elegant Victorian mansion built in 1890 by the lumber baron
The Lumber Baron Inn
John Mouat. Residing in the Porter-Highland neighborhood of North Denver, it is near an excellent selection of restaurants and bars. The Inn, lovingly restored to its original grandeur, received second place in the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Great American Home Award in 1995.

Our visit took place in October of 2016 shortly after the mansion was acquired by its present owner Chef Joel Bryant and his wife Elaine. They had just started putting their personal imprint on the mansion and we could tell that, when completed, the Inn was going to be distinctive.

Today, the Lumber Baron offers B&B accommodations in their five opulent,antique-filled, guest suites located on the second floor – The Honeymoon Suite, The Garden Suite, The Valentine Suite, The Anniversary Suite and The Colorado Room. B&B guests can be treated to private dining.

The Inn is a stunning site for weddings and receptions using the backyard garden oasis and the third-floor ballroom. The garden is shaded by enormous narrow leafed cottonwood trees and filled with avariety of flowers, and fountains. The ballroom originally
The Garden Oasis
hosted teas, dances and social functions for the elite of Denver from 1890s into the early 1900s.  On the ballroom level is the top of the turret with great views of Downtown Denver and the surrounding neighborhood. The turret is the site of Chef Bryant’s “Most Romantic Dinner for 2.” A definite must do on our next visit.

We stayed in the Garden Suite overlooking the gardens. The room was very large and beautifully appointed. Loved having the ample

sitting room in the suite. The bathroom was luxurious with a divine jacuzzi tub. The staff was very accommodating tending to our every request.

If for no other reason, you should stay at the Inn just to see the unique ceiling designs (each guest room is different) by Bradbury & Bradbury.  The ceiling was so beautiful in the Garden Suite I felt it was sinful to get out of bed!

Chef Brant has also added scrumptious Brunches and Afternoon Teas on the weekends, as well special events open to the public featuring wine pairing and themed dinners – such as the Titanic Dinner which featured the same elaborate meal served onboard April 14, 1912, and the Piedmont Dinner featuring delicacies and wines from the Piedmont region of Italy known for sophisticated cuisine and wines such as Barolo. Check the Inn’s webpage for the events calendar.

The Lumber Barron Inn and Gardens is one of Denver’s treasures. It is truly a mansion experience. There is absolutely nothing that would deter me from staying there again. I am also longing to host an event there so I can
The Parlor
share Chef Bryant’s talents with our family and friends in Denver.

Please note, due to the antiquity of the Inn, there is no elevator.
